Hiya, folks! As I gear up for this new podcast, I’m looking for recommendations on popular music in Mandarin. Anybody got any favorites they’d like to share? Where do you go for your Chinese tunes? Any iTunes-like sites I should know about?

Well, baidu.com is THE place to go for music.
Depends what sort of music you like, but I go for the crooners. Leslie Cheung （张国荣）and Tony Leung (梁朝偉) both sing quite a few songs in Mandarin, although they are both from Hong Kong. I quite like some of Jay Zhou’s music. Cai Qin is a popular oldies style female singer, if you saw Infernal Affairs hers was the song they played in the stereo shop. Wang Lee Hom is popular with the young girls. Sarah Chen is also one to look out for, her style is mellow.

I will just add, for anyone who is interested, that Leslie Cheung voice is good but not strong, but the arrangements a on a par with anything that Manilow or The Carpenters could do.

There does seems to be little bit of Chinese music on itunes. In the UK store under World… Asia… (there’s no Chinese subgenre) there’s a few Chinese artists but probably mostly obscure ones.
