The Octagon - 1st Week in Review

I need a t-shirt. I need a t-shirt that says, “I survived The Octagon at ChinesePod and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!”

So how was it? Honestly? It was awesome! There are a few things you should know, though, before you consider undertaking this task.

Disconnected. - The most palpable downside to the program is that, because you are being given your lesson plan by a counselor, you lose connection to the community on ChinesePod. Or at least I did. I didn’t have the time or wherewithal to do two lessons a day, or post any blog comments.

It’s hard! - Your counselor is going to give you lessons at or above your current level. That means you’re going to have to work for your progress. On Wednesday, I spent nearly two and a half hours preparing for my 15-minute phone call. Yesterday, however, it only took me 15 minutes to review the expansion material and do the exercises. Once you get your lesson plan, have a look at what’s ahead of you and plan accordingly!

It’s fun! - Aggie is an absolute doll and I had a blast talking to her. She was very encouraging and I looked forward to our calls every day. Plus, the review questions are just plain fun to do. I wish they’d add a fourth and fifth set of exercises. They really help me drive home the lessons and supplemental vocabulary.

It works! - We’re only one week in and I already see the progress I’m making. There’s no doubt in mind that I’ll exceed my expectations for this course. If you’re serious about learning Chinese, consider this course. Seriously.

I’ve been a little behind on responding to comments this week, but I have been reading them all and I do appreciate you folks sticking with me.

Last, I know I promised a new regular feature starting this Friday, but it looks like I’ll have to push it off a week! Stay tuned!
