Taking clases in Portland

If you live in the Portland area and want to take classes in spoken Chinese, then take a look at this iniative. It was inspired by ChinesePod learner, Eric Grimm and his friend, D’Arcy Owen, from Everest College.
I wish them the best of luck and we will follow their progress.

Is Steve Kaufman right?

There’s a discussion (posted by user happy-hk) on the forums today about Steve Kaufman. Mr. Kaufman has managed to learn 9 languages. From what I know of him, he seems like a very insightful and talented language learner. happy-hk has a list of insights that he says come from Kaufman. Here they are:

Posting lessons in your blog (again)

Someone just asked me how to post an audio lesson to a blog. It’s really simple- there’s a box below the Listen button on each lesson. Just highlight the text in the box and copy/paste directly into your blog. And here it is:

Overload

Jeremy Uriz has some interesting comments on his blog today. In his quest to become bi-lingual and he’s trying different methods, including ChinesePod. I think he points to a change in perceptions, brought about by web 2.0 technologies and, perhaps the experience of ChinesePod. One point I found particularly interesting:

Y’all learn Chinese

Here’s another take on why we should all learn Chinese. Rapper Jin doesn’t speak much Chinese in the video - just a few words of Cantonese - but he certainly seems to think it’s a good idea to learn some.
I ain’t your 50 cent, I ain’t your Eminem, I ain’t your Jigga Man, I’m a […]

Why learn Chinese?

This article offers 10 reasons why learning Chinese makes sense. It’s directed at home business owners, so it’s probably not the reasons why you or I would choose to study the language. Here they are:
1. Because the world is changing
2. Because everyone else is doing it
3. To stay competitive
4. Global supply chains
5. Manufacturing
6. Because the […]

Lessons Learned: Uncertainty engages the mind

Professor Ellen Langer, of Harvard, once told an anecdote that reveals something important.
One day she handed out a paper to a group of students and said, ‘Read this. You’re going to be tested on it.’ Later she handed out the same paper to a different group and said, ‘Read this. You’re going to be tested […]

Ken Carroll discusses issues concerning learning generally, and learning Mandarin in particular. With technology as the driver, he believes the most effective learning combines elements of collaboration with self-direction. If that seems like a contradiction, then you need to read the blog.
