ChinesePod in the Chcago Tribune

Nathan Bierma pens an article in the Chicago Tribune today on language learning and podcasting. It’s a pretty good overview of the various offerings out there, including ChinesePod.

Very nice! If it’s the same Nathan Bierma, he used to live just down the street from me and went to my alma mater (www.calvin.edu)

    Small world.

I’ve been waiting for an Arabic podcast, and while I haven’t checked out the one he mentions in detail, it doesn’t look like it’s available through iTunes, which is too bad.

Jonathan, which Arabic do you wish to learn? The spoken language varies from country to country - even tribe to tribe. (Egyptians on Hajj to Saudi experience language difficulties.) Classical Arabic is beautiful, but about as useful as learning Elizabethan English. Decide where you want to go and learn the language spoken for that area.

Ken Carroll discusses issues concerning learning generally, and learning Mandarin in particular. With technology as the driver, he believes the most effective learning combines elements of collaboration with self-direction. If that seems like a contradiction, then you need to read the blog.
